WHY IT WORKS

One tutor, one student. It has always been the thing that works.

In a classroom it is one explanation at one pace for thirty students, and the class moves on whether or not it landed. That is not a teacher problem, it is a format problem, and one-to-one attention has always been too expensive to give everyone. Here is what the evidence says, and what we do about it.

THE FOUNDATION

The two sigma problem.

In 1984 the educational psychologist Benjamin Bloom compared students taught in an ordinary classroom against students taught one to one. The tutored group performed about two standard deviations better, which put the average tutored student ahead of roughly 98% of the classroom group. Bloom called it a problem rather than a finding, because tutoring every student was not affordable. Forty years later that is still the gap worth closing.

THE EVIDENCE

Testing yourself is not how you measure learning. It is how you do it.

Decades of cognitive science point the same way: students who practise retrieving material remember more, and for longer, than students who spend the same time re-reading it. The effect is strongest for problem-solving subjects like math, where knowing the method matters more than recognising it. Re-reading a solution produces the feeling of understanding without the ability to reproduce it, which is why so many students walk into a test confident and freeze.

01THE TESTING EFFECT

Retrieving beats re-reading

Reading a worked solution feels like learning. Pulling the method out of your own head is learning. Every unit ends in questions you attempt cold, because that is the part that sticks.

02GENERATION EFFECT

Attempt first, reveal second

The solution stays hidden until you have committed to an answer. Seeing the steps after you have struggled tells you where your method broke. Seeing them before just tells you the answer.

03WORKED EXAMPLE EFFECT

Worked examples, then fading support

Nobody learns a new method from a blank page. We show the full working first, then hand progressively more of it back to you until you are doing all of it yourself.

04SPACING EFFECT

Spread out, not crammed

One practice test three days before your exam, reviewed, then another closer to the date beats one long night. Units stay available so you can come back to the ones that did not hold.

WHAT A PAPER CANNOT GIVE YOU

Twenty years of the tests your school actually sets.

Good method is not enough on its own. A question written for a textbook does not look like the question your teacher sets in November.
